Genesis 3

1 Now the snake was more crafty
than all the beasts of the field
which Yahweh
God had made.
“Is it not true that
God said,
‘You shall eat from every tree of the garden?’”
2 And the woman said to the snake,
“Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat.
3 But of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden,
God said, ‘You shall not eat from it,
and you shall not touch it,
lest you shall die.’”
4 And the snake said to the woman,
“You shall not surely die.
5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it
then your eyes will be opened,
and you will be like God,
knowing good and evil.

6 But when the woman saw
that the tree was good for food,
and it was pleasant to the eyes,

and desirable for making intelligent,
then she took the fruit of it and ate it.
And she gave also to her husband with her and he ate.

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they knew that they were naked.
So they sowed fig leaves
and made for themselves aprons.

8 Then they heard the sound of Yahweh God
walking about in the garden in the breeze of the day.
So the man and his wife hid from the presence of Yahweh God
in the midst of the trees of the garden.

9 Then Yahweh God called to the man,
and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 And he said,
“I heard your sound in the garden and I was afraid,

for I was naked, so I hid.”
11 And he said,
“Who told you that you were naked?
Have you eaten from the tree
which I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 And the man said,
“The woman which you gave to me,
she gave to me from the tree and I ate.”
13 And Yahweh God said to the wife,
What is this thing you have done?”
And the wife said,
“The snake deceived me and I ate.”
14 Then Yahweh
God said to the snake,
“Because you have done this thing,
cursed are you of all the cattle,
and all the beasts of the field
.
Upon your belly you shall walk,
and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity between you and the wife,
and between your seed and her seed.
He will bruise the head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 Unto the wife he said,
“I will greatly increase your pain and pregnancy,
in sorrow you shall bear children.

And unto your husband shall be your desire,
and he will rule over you.”

17 And to the man he said,
“Because you listened to the voice of your wife,
and ate from the tree which I commanded you, saying,
‘You shall not eat from it,’
cursed is the ground because of you.
In sorrow you shall eat from all the days of your life.
18 And thorns and thistles is shall bring forth for you,
and you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread,
until you return to the ground,
for from it you were taken.
For dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

20 And the man called the name of his wife “Eve,”
for she was the mother of all life.

21 Then Yahweh God made garments of skin
for the man and his wife, and clothed them.
22 Then Yahweh
God said,
“Behold, the man has become like one of us,

knowing good and evil.
And now, lest he stretch forth his hand and take
also from the Tree of Life,
and eat and live forever.”
23 Then Yahweh
God cast him from the garden of Eden
to work the ground from which he was taken.
24 Then he drove out the man,
and placed
from the East for the garden of Eden cherubim,
and a flaming sword turning about,
to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
