1 Then Adam knew Eve his wife
and she conceived and bore Cain.
And she said,
“I have procured a man from Yahweh.”
2 Then she again bore his brother, Abel.
So it happened,
Abel was a tender of sheep;
Cain was a worker of the ground.
3 And it was, in the course of days,
that Cain brought, from the fruit of the ground,
an offering to Yahweh.
4 And Abel also brought
from the firstfruit of his flock, and the fat of it.
And Yahweh regarded Abel and unto his offering,
5 but unto Cain and unto his offering he did not regard.
And it angered Cain greatly, and his face fell.
6 Then Yahweh said to Cain,
“Why are you angry?
And why is your face fallen?
7 If you shall do well will you not be raised up?
And if you shall not do well,
sin lies at your door.
And unto you shall be its desire,
but you shall rule over it.”
8 Then Cain spoke to Abel his brother.
So it was, while they were in the field,
that Cain rose up against Abel his brother,
and slew him.
9 Then Yahweh said to Cain,
“Where is Abel your brother?”
But he said, “I do not know,
am I the keeper of my brother.”
10 Then he said,
“What have you done?
The blood of Abel your brother
shrieks to me from the ground.
11 So now you are cursed from the ground,
which opens its mouth
to receive the blood of your brother from your hand.
12 For when you shall work the ground,
she shall not yield her power to you.
A vagabond and a wanderer you shall be on the
earth.
13 But Cain said to Yahweh,
“My iniquity is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, you have driven me this day
from upon the face of the ground,
and from your presence I will be hidden.
And I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth,
and anyone who finds me will slay me.
15 But Yahweh said to him,
“Therefore, whoever slays Cain,
sevenfold vengeance.”
Then Yahweh set upon Cain a mark,
lest anyone who finds him should kill him.
16 So Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh,
and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17 Then Cain knew his wife,
and she conceived and bore Enoch.
And he built a city,
and called the name of the city
after the name of his son.
18 And Irad was born to Enoch.
And Irad bore Mejuhel.
And Mejuhel bore Methusael.
And Methusael bore Lamek.
19 Now Lamek took for himself two wives.
The name of first was Adah,
and the name of the second was Tsilah.
20 And Adah bore Jabal.
He was the father
of those who dwell in tents and have cattle.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal.
He was the father
of all who play the harp and the flute.
22 And Tsilah also bore to him Tubal-Cain,
the instructor of all crafters of bronze and iron.
And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Namah.
23 Then Lemek spoke to his wives, Adah and Tsilah.
“Hear my voice, you wives of Lemek,
and harken to my my speech.
For I have slain a man to my wounding,
and a young man to my hurt.
If Cain will be avenged sevenfold,
then Lemek seventy-sevenfold.
25 Then Adam knew his wife again
and she bore a son and called his name Seth.
“For God has placed for me
another seed in the place of Abel
whom Cain slew.”
26 Then Seth also bore himself a son,
and called his name Enosh,
then he began to call on the name of Yahweh.
