Deuteronomy 6

1 And these are the commands,
statues, and judgments,
which Yahweh your God commands you,
to teach you to do them,

in the land which you are passing over there
to possess.

2 So that you shall fear Yahweh your God,
to keep all his statutes and commands,
which I am commanding you,

you, and your son, and your son’s son,
all the days of your life,
and that may be prolonged your life.

3 Hear, O Israel, and keep to do,
that it may be well with you,

and that you shall multiply greatly,
just as Yahweh the God of your forefathers
said to you,
a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel,
Yahweh our God,
Yahweh is One.
You shall love Yahweh your God,
with all your heart,
and with all your soul,
and with all your might.
6 And these words which I command you today
shall be upon your heart,
7 and you shall teach them to your children,
and speak of them when you sit in your house,
and when you walk in the way,
and when you lie down,
and when you wake up.
8 And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand,
and they shall be as frontlets before your eyes,
9 and you shall write them upon the posts of your house,
and upon your gates.

10 So it will be,
when Yahweh your God has brought you
to the land he swore to your forefathers,
to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob,
to give to you great and good cities,
which you did not build,
11 and houses full of all good things,
which you did not fill,
and wells dug,
which you did not dig,
vineyards and olive trees,
which you did not plant,
and you eat and are full,
12 be careful for yourselves,
lest you shall forget Yahweh,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt,
out of the house of slavery.

13 You shall fear Yahweh your God,
and him you shall serve,
and in his name you shall swear.
14 You shall not go after other gods,
the gods of the people around you.

15 For Yahweh your God
is a jealous God in your midst.
Lest the anger of Yahweh your God
be kindled among you,
and he destroy you
from upon the face of the ground.
16 You shall not test Yahweh your God,
just as you did at Macah.

17 You shall surely keep the commands
of Yahweh your God,
and his testimonies, and his statues,
which he has commanded you.
And do what is upright and good
in the eyes of Yahweh,
so that it may be well with you,

and you may go and possess the good land
which Yahweh swore to your forefathers,
19 to cast out all your enemies from before you,
just as Yahweh has said.

20 When your son shall ask you,
in a time to come, saying,
“What are the testimonies,
and statues, and judgements,
which Yahweh our God commanded to us?”

21 Then say to your son,
“We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt,
but Yahweh brought us up from Egypt
with a strong hand.
22 And Yahweh gave signs and wonders,
great and fearful,
against Egypt, and against Pharaoh,
and against all his house before our eyes.
23 And he brought us up from there,
so that he could bring us
and give to us the land
that he swore to our forefathers.
24 So he commanded us to do
all these statues;
to fear Yahweh our God,
that it would be well with us all the days,
to keep us alive like we are today.
15 And it shall be our righteousness,
if we harken to do
all these commandments,
before Yahweh our God,
just as he commanded us.”
