Exodus 34

The Stone Tablets

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses,
"Carve for yourself two tablets of stone

like the first.
And I will write upon the tablets
the words which were on the first tablets,
which you broke."

2 "So be ready in the morning,
and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai,
and present yourself to me
there on top of the mountain.
3 But do not let anyone come up with you,
and neither let a man be seen in all the mountain,
neither led the flocks nor the herds
feed before that mountain."

4 So he carved two tablets of stone,
like the first.
Then Moses rose up in the morning
and went up to Mount Sinai,
just as Yahweh had commanded him,

and took in his hand
the two tablets of stone.

5 Then Yahweh came down in the cloud,
and stood with him there,

and he called out in the name of Yahweh.

6 Then Yahweh passed by before him,
and called out,
"Yahweh, Yahweh,
the God compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger,
and abounding in love and faithfulness,

maintaining love to thousands,
forgiving inquity, and trespasses, and sin,

but surely not acqutting the guilty,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers
upon the children,
and upon the children's children,
unto the third and the fourth."

8 Then Moses made haste,
and bowed down to the earth
and worshipped
.
And said,
"I now I have found favor in your eyes
,
Lord, go now, Lord, in our midst,

for it is a stiff-necked people,
and pardon our iniquity and our sin,
and take us an your inheritance."

10 And he said,
"Behold,

I will cut a covenant with you,
before all your people,

I will do wonders which have not been done
in all the earth and in all the nations.
And all the peoples will see what you are
among the works of Yahweh.
For it is awesome what I will do with you.

Priestly 10 Commandments

11 Keep for yourself
that which I command this day.
Behold, I will drive out from before you
the Amorites, and the Canaanites,
and the Hittites, and the Perizzites,
and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

I. No Covenants

12 Take heed for yourself,
lest you cut a covenant
with the inhabitants of the land
where you are going,
lest it be a snare for you in your midst.
13 For you shall destroy their altars,
and you shall break their images,
and you shall cut down their Asherahs.

II. No Other Gods

14 For you shall not worship another god,
for Yahweh Qanah is his name,
he is a jealous (qanah) God.
15 Lest you cut a covenant
with the inhabitants of the land,
and prostitute after their gods,
and sacrifice to their gods,
and you call upon and eat his sacrifice.
16 And you take from their daughters
for your sons,
and your daughters prostitute
after their gods,
and your sons prostitute
after their gods.

III. No Molten Gods

17 You shall not make for yourself
molten gods.

IV. Unleavened Bread

18 The Feast of Unleavened Bread
you shall keep.
For seven days you shall eat
unleavened bread,
which I have commanded you
in the month of Aviv.
For in the month of Aviv
you came out of Egypt.

V. Redeeming the Firstborn

19 Every firstling of the womb is mine,
and every male of the cattle,
the firstling ox and sheep.
20 The firstling donkey you must
redeem with a sheep.
And if you do not redeem it
you shall break its neck.
All the firstborn of your sons
you shall redeem,
and no on shall appear before me
empty-handed.

VI. The Sabbath

21 Six days you shall work,
but on the seventh day you shall rest.
In the plowing and in the harvest,
you shall rest.

VII. Three Annual Feasts

22 And the Feast of Weeks
you shall make for yourself,
at the firstfruits of the harvest of wheat.
And the Feast of Gathering
at the end of the year.
23 Three times in the year
all your seed shall appear
before the Lord Yahweh,
the God of Israel.
24 For I will cast out the nations
from before you,
and enlarge your borders,
and no one will lack for land
when you go up to appear
before Yahweh your God
three times in the year.

VIII. No Mixed Sacrifice

25 You shall not slaughter the blood
of my sacrifice with leavened bread.

IX. No Leftovers

And the Feast of the Passover
shall not be left until morning.

X. Firstfruits and Mother's Milk

26 The first of the firstfruits of the ground
you shall bring to the house
of Yahweh your God.
You shall not boil a kid
in the milk of his mother.

Southern Story

27 Then Yahweh said to Moses,
"Write for yourself these words,

for on the face of these words
I have cut a covenant with you,
and with Israel."

28 And he was there with Yahweh
forty days and forty nights,
he did not eat bread,
and he did not drink water,
but he wrote upon the tablets

the words of the covenant,
the Ten Words.

29 So it happened,
when Moses came down from Mount Sinai
,
and the two tablets
of the testimony
were in the hands of Moses,
when he came down from the mountain.
But Moses did not know
that the skin of his face radiated
from speaking with him.

30 Then Aaron and
all the children of Israel saw Moses,
and behold, the skin of his face radiated,
so they were afraid to come near him.

31 But Moses called to them.
So Aaron and all the leaders
of the congregation
returned to him,
and Moses spoke to them.
32 Then after this
all the children of Israel came near.

And he commanded them all which
Yahweh spoke with him
on Mount Sinai
.

33 Then when Moses finished
speaking
with them,
he put a veil over his face.
34 But when Moses went before Yahweh
to speak with him,
he removed the veil until he came out.

Then he came out and told
the children of Israel
what he was commanded.

35 But the children of Israel
feared the face of Moses,
for the skin of Moses' face radiated.
So Moses put the veil back on his face
until he went to speak with him.
