Exodus 8

The Plague of Frogs

1 Then Yahweh [God] said to Moses,
"Go to Pharaoh and say to him,
'Thus says Yahweh,
Send forth my people that they may serve me.
2 But if you refuse to send them forth,
behold, I will plague all your borders
with frogs,
3 and the canal will swarm with frogs."

"And they will come up
and go into your house,
and into your bedroom,
and onto your bed,
and into the house of your servants,
and upon your people,
and into your ovens,
and into your kneeding troughs.
4 And upon your people
and upon your servants
will come up the frogs."

5 Then Yahweh [God] said to Moses,
say to Aaron,
"Put forth your hand with your staff
upon the streams,
and upon the rivers,
and upon the ponds,
and bring up frogs
upon the land of Egypt."

6 So Aaron put forth his hand
over the waters of Egypt,
and frogs came up
and covered the land of Egypt.
7 And the magicians did likewise
with their trickeries,
and brought up frogs
upon the land of Egypt.

8 Then Pharaoh called Moses
and Aaron, and said,
"Intercede to Yahweh,
and take away the frogs from me,
and from my people,
and I will send the people forth
that they may sacrifice to Yahweh."

9 And Moses said to Pharaoh,
"The honor is upon me to intercede for you,

and for your servants,
and for your people,
to cut off the frogs from you,
and from your houses,
only in the canal they shall remain."

10 And he said, "Tomorrow?"

And he said, "According to your word,
so that you shall know
that there is none like Yahweh our God.
11 And the frogs will turn away from you,
and from your houses,
and from your servants,
and from your people,
only in the canal they shall remain."

12 Then Moses and Aaron
went out from Pharaoh.

The Moses shrieked to Yahweh
about the matter of the frogs
which he had brought against Pharaoh.
13 And Yahweh did
according to the word of Moses.

Then the frogs died,
out of the houses,
and out of the villages,
and out of the fields.
14 And they gathered them in heaps of heaps,
and the land stunk.

15 Then Pharaoh saw that there was relief,
and his heart glorified.
But he did not listen to them,
just as Yahweh had said.

16 Then Yahweh said to Moses,
say to Aaron,
"Put forth your staff,
and smite the dust of the land,
that there will be lice in all the land of Egypt."
17 And he did so.

And Aaron put forth his hand with his staff,
and smote the dust of the dust of the land,
and there was lice upon man and beast,
all the dust of the land.
There was lice in all the land of Egypt.

18 And did likewise the magicians
with their trickeries,
to bring forth lice,
but they were not able to.
But there was lice upon man and beast.
19 And the magicians said to Pharaoh,
"This is the finger of God."

But the heart of Pharaoh was strong,
and he did not listen to them,
just as Yahweh had said.

The Plague of Flies

20 Then Yahweh [God] said to Moses,
"Rise up early in the morning,
and stand before Pharaoh
.
Behold, he will come to the water."

"Then say to him,
'Thus says Yahweh,
Send forth my people that they may serve me.
21 For if you will not send forth my people,
behold, I will send forth upon you,
and upon your servants,
and upon your people,
and upon your houses,
flies,
and the flies will fill the houses
of the Egyptians,
and also the ground where they are upon.'"

22 "But I will separate in that day,
the land of Goshen
where my people dwell upon,
so that you shall know that
I am Yahweh in the midst of the land.
23 And I will put a separation
between your people and my people.

Tomorrow
will be this sign."
24 And Yahweh did so.

And the flies came heavily
into the house of Pharaoh,
and the house of his servants,
and in all the land of Egypt,
the land was corrupt
from the presence of the flies.

25 Then Pharaoh called Moses
and Aaron, and said,
"Go sacrifice to your God in the land."

26 But Moses said,
"It is not right to do so.
For it is an abomination to the Egyptians
to sacrifice to Yahweh our God.
Behold, if we sacrifice an abomination
of Egypt before their eyes,
will they not stone us?
27 Let us go three days away
into the wilderness
to sacrifice to Yahweh our God,
just as he has told us."

28 Then Pharaoh said,
"I will send you forth that you may
sacrifice to Yahweh your God
in the wilderness.
Only do not go very far.
Intercede for me."

29 So Moses said,
"I will go from you,
and intercede to Yahweh
to remove the flies from Pharaoh,

and from his servants,
and from his people,

tomorrow.
Only let not Pharaoh
deal deceitfully anymore
in not sending forth the people
to sacrifice to Yahweh."

30 Then Moses went forth from Pharaoh
and interceded to Yahweh.
31 And Yahweh did
according to the word of Moses,
and removed the flies from Pharaoh,

from his servants,
and from his people,

there remained not one.

32 But Pharaoh glorified his heart
also regarding this,
and did not send the people forth.
