Daniel 9

1 In the first year of Darius,
the son of Xerxes,
a decendant of the Medes,
who was king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans.

2 In the first year of his reign,
I Daniel understood from the scriptures
the number of years since the word of Yahweh
had come to the prophet Jeremiah,
that the desolations of Jerusalem
would be fulfilled in seventy years.
3 So I set my face toward the Lord my God,
to seek prayer and supplication,
in fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

4 Then I prayed to Yahweh my God,
and made confession and said,

The Prayer of Daniel

"I beseech you, O Lord,
the great and dreadful God,
who keeps covenant and loving-kindness
to those who love him
and who keep his commands.

5 We have sinned and committed iniquity,
we have acted wickedly and rebelled,
and have turned away from your commands and judgments,
6 and have not obeyed your servants the prophets,
who spoke in your name,
to our kings, our leaders, and our fathers,
and to all the people of the land.

7 Yours is the righteousness, O Lord,
but ours are the faces of shame to this very day,
of the people of Judah,
and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
and of all Israel,
the near and the far,
in all the lands to which you have banished them,
for their treachery which they have committed against you.

8 O Yahweh,
ours are the faces of shame,
of our kings, and of our leaders, and of our fathers,
because we have sinned against you.
9 Yours, O Lord our God,
are the mercies and the forgivenesses.

For we have rebelled against him.
10 And we have not obeyed Yahweh our God,
to walk in his laws,
which he set before us
by the hand of his servants the prophets.

10 And all Israel has transgressed your law,
and turned away so as not to obey your voice.

11 So the curse and the oath are poured out against us,
which were written in the law of Moses the servant of God,
for we have sinned against him.
12 And he has upheld his words which he spoke against us,
and against our judges who judged for us,
to bring against us a great evil,
such as has not been done under all the heavens,
as has been done in Jerusalem.
13 As it was written in the law of Moses,
all this evil came upon us.
But we have not grieved before Yahweh our God.

to turn back from our iniquity
and understand your truth.

14 So Yahweh has watched over the evil
and brought it upon us.
For Yahweh is righteous in all the works he does,
but we have not obeyed his voice.

15 But now, O Lord our God,
who brought forth your people
out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand,
and makes a name for yourself to this very day,
we have sinned,
we have acted wickedly.

16 O Lord, according to your righteousness,
let be turned away, I pray,
your anger and your fury from the city of Jerusalem,
your holy mountain.

For because of our sins
and the iniquities of our fathers
Jerusalem and your people
are a reproach to everyone around us.

17 But now listen, our God,
to the prayer of your servant,
and to his supplication.
And let you face shine
upon your sanctuary which is desolate,
for the sake of the Lord.
18 Incline your ear, my God, and hear.
Open your eyes and see our desolations,
and the city which calls upon your name.
For not upon our righteous deeds
do we lay down our supplications before you,
but upon your many mercies.

19 O Lord, hear!
O Lord, forgive!
O Lord, answer and do it!
Do not delay,
for your sake, O God,
for the city that calls upon your name,
and for your people.

20 And while I was speaking and praying,
and confessing my sin,
and the sin of my people Israel,
and laying my supplication before Yahweh my God
for the holy mountain of my God,
21 and while while I was speaking in prayer,
then the man Gabriel,
whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning,
being made to fly quickly, touched me,
about the time of the evening sacrifice.

22 And he informed me and talked with me, and said,
"O Daniel,
now I have come forth to enable you to understand.
23 At the beginning of your supplications
the word came forth.
And I have come to declare it,
for you are precious.
So understand the word and consider the vision.

24 Seventy weeks are determined upon your people,
and upon your holy city,
for finishing the transgression,
and for sealing up sins,
and for covering iniquity,
and for bringing everlasting righteousness,
and for sealing up vision and prophecy,
and for anointing the holy of holies.

25 So know and understand,
from the going forth of the command
to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem,
until the anointed leader,
seven weeks,
and sixty-two weeks.
The street and the walls
shall be restored and built up,
but in troubled times.
26 And after sixty-two weeks
the anointed one will be cut off,
but not by his own.
And the people of the leader to come
will destroy the city and the sanctuary,
and it will end in a flood.
And until the end of the war
desolations are decreed.

27 And he will confirm a covenant with many
one week.
But in the middle of the week
he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease.
And upon the wing of abominations
he will be desolating
even until the fulfillment.
Then what is decreed shall be poured out
upon the desolating one.
