Manna from Heaven
1 Then they set out from Elim,
and came
all the congregation of
the sons of Israel
to the wilderness of Sin,
which is between Elim and Sinai,
on the fifteenth day of the second month
since they left the land of Israel.
2 Then all the
congregation of
the sons of Israel
grumbled against Moses
and against Aaron
in the wilderness.
3 And the sons of Israel said
to them,
"If only you had let us die
in the hand of Yahweh
in the land of Egypt,
when we sat by the pot of flesh,
and ate bread to the full.
For you have brought us to this wilderness
to kill all this assembly with hunger."
4 Then
Yahweh [God] said to Moses,
"Behold, I will rain down bread
from the heavens for you,
and the people will go out and gather
a portion day by day,
so that I may test them
if they will walk in my Law or not."
5 "So it will be on the sixth day
that they will prepare
that which they bring in,
and it will be double of that
which they gather day by day."
6 Then Moses and Aaron
said to all the sons of Israel,
"At evening you will know
that Yahweh has brought you
from the land of Egypt,
7 and in the morning you will see
the glory of Yahweh,
since he hears your grumbling
against Yahweh.
And who are we
that you grumble against us?"
8 Then Moses said,
"When Yahweh gives you
flesh to eat in the evening,
and bread to the full in the morning,
since he hears your grumbling
against
Yahweh,
and who are we?
You do not grumble against us,
for it is against Yahweh."
9 Then Moses said to Aaron,
Say to all the congregation
of the sons of Israel,
"Come near before Yahweh,
for he has heard your grumbling."
10 And it happened,
as Aaron spoke
to all the congregation of
the sons of Israel,
that they looked toward the wilderness,
and behold,
the glory of Yahweh appeared in a cloud."
11 The Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
12 "I have heard the grumblings
of the sons of Israel.
Speak to them and say,
'In the evening you shall eat flesh,
and in the morning
you shall be filled with bread,
and you will know that
I am Yahweh your God."
13 And it happened in the evening,
that quail came up and covered the camp.
And in the morning there was dew
laying all around the camp.
14 Then the dew went up from lying,
and behold,
upon the face of the wilderness,
a small round thing,
as small as the frost upon the ground.
15 And when the children of Israel saw it,
they said to one another,
"What is it?" (man huw)
For they did not know what it was.
Then Moses said to them,
"This is the bread,
which Yahweh [God] has given you to eat."
16 "This is the word
which Yahweh has commanded,
Gather for yourselves each one
for the mouth of his eating,
take each man
for the number of souls in your tent."
17 So the sons of Israel did so.
And some gathered more and some less.
18 And they measured with an omer.
And those who gathered more,
did not have too much,
and those who gathered less,
did not have too little.
Each one gathered
for the mouth of his eating.
19 Then Moses said to them,
"No one shall leave any of it
until morning."
20 But they did not listen to Moses,
but some of them kept some of it
until morning.
And worms came up,
and it stank.
So Moses was angry with them.
21 Then every man gathered it to him
morning by morning,
for the mouth of his eating.
but when the sun got hot it melted.
22 And it happened on the sixthed day,
they gathered bread twice,
two omers for each one.
So all the leaders of the people
came and told it to Moses.
23 Then he said to them,
"This is what has spoken Yahweh,
'The rest of Shabbat is holy to Yahweh.'"
"Tomorrow,
that which you shall bake, bake,
and that which your shall boil, boil,
and that which is left over,
store up for yourselves,
to be kept until morning."
24 So they stored it up until morning,
just as Moses commanded,
and it did not stink,
and there was not a worm in it.
25 Then Moses said,
"Eat today,
for today is Shabbat to Yahweh,
today you shall not find it in the field.
26 Six days you shall gather it,
but on the seventh, Shabbat.
You will not find it there."
27 And it happened,
on the seventh day,
some of the people went out to gather,
but they found none.
28 Then Yahweh said to Moses,
"How long will you refuse
to keep my commands and my laws?"
29 "See,
Yahweh has given you the Shabbat.
Therefore he has given you,
on the seventh day,
bread for two days.
Everyone shall abide in their place.
Not one shall go out from his place
on the seventh day."
30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 So the house of Israel
called the name of it "manna."
And it was white like coriander seed,
and its taste was like wafers with honey.
32 Then Moses said,
"This is the word
which Yahweh has commanded,
Fill and omer of it to be kept for generations,
so that they will see the bread
which I fed you in the wilderness,
when I brought you from the land of Egypt.
33 Then Moses said to Aaron,
"Take one pot,
and put a full omer of manna in it,
and lay it up before Yahweh,
to be kept for generations.
34 So just as Yahweh commanded Moses,
Aaron laid it up before the testimony
for keeping.
35 And the children of Israel
ate the manna forty years,
until they came to the inhabited land.
The manna they ate
until they came to the borders
of the land of Canaan.
36 Now an omer is a tenth of an ephah.
