Priestly Elohist Story

4 Now Ninevah was a great city to God,
a journey of three days.
When Jonah began to enter the city
on the first day of the journey,
he cried out and said,
"Yet forty days,
and Ninevah will be overthrown."

5 And the men of Ninevah
believed in God,
and declared a fast,
and put on sackcloth,
from their greatest and to their least.

6 Then the word came
to the king of Ninevah.
And he rose up from his throne,
and he laid off his robe from upon him,
and covered in sackcloth,
and sat in the ashes.

7 Then he shrieked and said in Ninevah,
by the decree of the King and his nobles,
saying,
"The man and the beast,
the heard and the flock,
let not taste anything,
let not graze,
let not drink water."

8 "But let be covered in sackcloths,
the man and the beast,
and cry mightily unto God.
Let every man turn from his evil way,
and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Who knows,
God may turn and repent,
and turn away from the wrath of his anger,
and we may not perish."

10 Then God saw their works,
that they turned from their evil way,
and God repented of the evil
which he said he would do to them,
and he did not do it.
