Jonah 4

Southern Story

1 But this displeased Jonah.
He was greatly displeased
and became jealous.

2 So he prayed to Yahweh, and said,
"Please, Yahweh,
was this not what I said
when I was in my country, therefore,
before I fled to Tarshish?"

"For I knew that you were
'a God compassionate and merciful,
slow to anger,
and abounding in love,'
(Ex 34:6)
and repenting of evil."

3 "So now, Yahweh,
Take, please, my life from me,
for it is better for me to die than to live.

4 But Yahweh said,
"Is it good that you are jealous?"

5 Then Jonah went out from the city,
and dwelled east of the city,
and made for himself a booth there,
and dwelled beneath its shade,
until he might see
what would happen to the city.

6 Then Yahweh God appointed a weed,
and made it come over for Jonah,
that it would be a shade over his head,
to deliver him from his grief.
And Jonah was glad for the weed.
He rejoiced greatly.

7 Then God appointed a worm,
that rose up the next morning,
and smote the vine and it withered.

8 And it happened,
that the sun arose.
And God appointed a harsh east wind,
and the sun smote upon the head of Jonah,
and he fainted,
and he wished his sould to die.
And he said,
"It is better for me to die than to live."

9 But God said to Jonah,
"Is it good that you are jealous for the vine?"

And he said,
"Is it good that I am jealous unto death?"

10 Then Yahweh said,
"You had pity on the vine,
for which you had not labored,
and which you did not make grow.
Which grew up in a night and was,
and in a night is perished."

11 "But I should not have pity on Ninevah,
the great city,
which in it there are more than
a hundred and twenty thousand men
who do not know between
their right hand and their left,
beside many cattle?"
